Trip to the zoo to celebrate birthday #2

It seems like it wasn't that long ago, I was photographing her newborn pictures.  Last year we met up right before Easter to celebrate her turning one...and now all of the sudden, it seems, Ryne is 2 years old!  My how time flies!

This photo shoot was a treat for me because it was a new location - the zoo!

There was a lovely break in the weather so we took full advantage.

It took her a minute to warm up, but the train made it all better.  I can't get over her giddiness and wonderful smiles!

We had such a lovely day with Ryne, her mom and grammy...and her newborn sister, Ivy, did such a good job letting us get all of our fun and pictures done before she decided she was hungry.

Thank you so much, Kari and Jan for inviting us to a beautiful day at the zoo!  Vinny and I enjoyed hanging out with you all.  It was a real treat!

Happy Birthday, Ryne!  ...and many, many more!

warmth & sunshine

This week Mother Nature has shined her love down on those of us living in the Midwest.  I could say the general population as been eagerly awaiting this weather.  To celebrate the warmth and sunshine, I am posting some pictures that remind me, summer is just around the corner.

Spring Baby | Easter Joy

Here she is!  This is little sweetheart, Ivy Claire.  I can't get over how precious her name is.  Her parents are huge Cubs fans.  Her older sister's name is Ryne...and now Ivy is the newest addition to the family.  I love it, being a huge Cubs fan myself.  Only two short years ago I was taking newborn pictures of Ryne and she did a fantastic job!  Ivy was just as great.  They must get their demeanor from their mom, she is one of the loveliest people I know...I and do believe she is that way because of her mom.  Her dad is awesome too!  I just can't say enough about this family.

Do-It-Yourself Laundry Soap

I was recently talking to a co-worker of mine that loves Pinterest as much as I do.  She told me how she has made her own laundry detergent and softener from recipes she has found on Pinterest.  I was a little skeptical at first.  I am picky about what I wash my clothes with and how the clothes smell after washing.  I want to be the mom in the commercial that takes the clothes out of the dryer, snuggles the towel against my face, and takes in a deep breath of what we can only imagine is fresh, spring meadow-y goodness.  After checking out different recipes, I decided to go with one and try it.  I did change it just a tad.  The great thing about this recipe is it cheap.  It is also very easy to make.  Did I say cheap?  It only costs less than a cent per load.  You can't beat that, so I decided to try it.  It not only works great, but it smells great too.  Sorry, Tide, but my days of buying you are gone.

Here is what you need:

DIY laundry soap ingredients photo

  • 1/3 bar of Fels-Naptha soap.  You can use other bars of soap, different brands call for different amounts.  I used the Fels-Naptha.  I found it in the laundry aisle at the grocery store.

  • 1/2 cup of Borax (also found in the laundry aisle of the grocery store)

  • 1/2 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda.  (note: completely different from baking soda and also found in the laundry aisle)

  • Essential oils - totally optional and the amount is up to you for how lovely smelling you would like your clothes.  I used a combination of Orange and Tangerine and it is a great, fresh citrus smell.

cooking pot for laundry soap

  • A large bucket (2 gallon) or pot to mix everything in.  I use a large pot that I cook corn on the cob in.  I found it easier because I cooked the soap and transferred it right to an orange juice container to store it.  Which brings me to the next need...

  • A container to store your soap in.  Some comments from the original recipe said to use an empty laundry detergent container.  I found that the soap does separate a bit, so I shake it up each time I do a load of laundry.  I used empty orange juice containers and they work great!

Here is what you do:

Cut your bar of Fels-Naptha soap into thirds.  Save the other 2/3 in a baggie for your next batch.  Grate the soap you cut for the recipe.

Put your grated soap in the pot with 6 cups of water.  Heat on low until the soap melts.  Do not boil the soap.  Once every bit of the soap shavings are melted, add the Borax and Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda.  Stir until the Borax and Soda are dissolved completely.  Continue cooking until the mixture thickens a little, about 10 minutes.  Remove from heat.  Add 4 cups of hot tap water to the mixture.  At this point you can add essential oils, or don't.

Now add one gallon plus 6 cups of hot tap water.  Stir for a couple of minutes and let it set overnight.

The next day, you should end up with a pretty thick looking mixture.

The original recipe said to put the mixture in to a blender and then into your container.  I did that with the first container.  It continued to separate even after I put it in the orange juice container.  I left the rest of the mix, needing another container to put it in.  After getting another container for the rest of the soap, I decided to just pour it in the orange juice container, skipping the blending step.  I figured if it was going to separate again anyway, why mess with blending it?  The rest of the soap never separated.  It looks like this:

Laundry soap post 002

The detergent is great for HE washers because there are minimal suds.  I used an old measuring cup from the last laundry soap I purchased to measure how much I need per load.

I love my new soap!  It smells great and works great.  I really like that I can change the smell for the next batch if I want to.  It is a great money saver and one less thing I have to remember to get from the store.

Later this week...dishwashing detergent.

Palmer & Patrick

One month ago yesterday, the Swan family welcomed their sweet baby girl, Palmer, into their lives.

After some rough times the first couple weeks with a nasty flu bug that swept through the whole family, I was able to get together with them and meet Palmer.

She was so alert for being just a couple of weeks old.  We slipped her into her spring dress and she decided to nap.  I hope that Mother Nature is checking out the picture below, shaking off the cobwebs of winter, and decides to spread some warmth on us.  Soon.

Patrick, Palmer's older brother, was waiting patiently for Palmer to get her pictures taken.  Patrick and I had some down time while Palmer was eating, so I tried getting him to smile for me...I bet you can't guess what finally did it...

I love that kid, and his never ending love for Elmo!

Congratulations Swan family on your newest addition to your wonderful family!  I look forward of years to come with your sweeties!

baby outtakes

I told you recently how I know so many people who are having

babies this year.  Last week it was my pleasure to photograph Ivy Claire,

a sweet little newbie from another one of my favorite families,

the Nolan family.  As I was going through the pictures, I

noticed a little theme in one of the sets I took.  I thought I

would put them together for you here for Ivy's sneak peek.

I love the yawn, the one eye open, and the puckered lips...but the one of her

pretending to be Dr. Evil from Austin Powers made me laugh the most.  Ivy was

an absolute darling to work with.  Stay tuned for the pictures that made the cut

from Ivy's shoot.  Congratulations Kari, Tim, Ryne and the rest of the Nolan Family!

DIY Homemade Carpet Freshener

I have children.

I have dogs.

I want my house smelling like I have neither.

I love Do-It-Yourself recipes on Pinterest.

I have decided I am going to actually start doing projects that I pin on Pinterest.  I did think I should ease into this and start with something simple like this homemade carpet freshener I found from Mrs. Happy Homemaker's website.  I threw in my own twist on the recipe.  The great thing is, you can find most of the ingredients in the laundry aisle of your local grocery store.

What you need:

1 cup of Borax (found with laundry detergent/supposed to kill insects)

Baking Soda and or Corn Meal (I use both together)

Optional for scent:

Ground Cloves

Nutmeg

Orange essential oil

During Christmastime, my mom used to set out a fresh bowl of oranges with whole cloves sticking out of them.  It gave off an amazing holiday scent and that is why I knew the orange essential oil would go great with the cloves and nutmeg.  You can add just essential oil of your choice.  The great thing is, it is up to you and you can make it as wonderful smelling as you want...or not.

Mix the Borax, baking soda/corn meal, cloves and nutmeg in a bowl.  I use about this much (see below).  Then add your essential oil.  I use as much as the picture shows.  Like I said, use as much or as little as you want, just be careful that the powder mixture doesn't start to clump from the moisture of the essential oils.  Remember, you still want it to be a powder.

Mix it all together and Voila!  You have custom made carpet freshener.  Like the original post says, you can put this in an empty grated cheese container.  I cheated and saved an empty container from carpet freshener I bought at the store.

I did see some comments on the original post about Borax being harmful to pets.  I do know that Borax is used to clean clothing and is gentle enough for baby clothing.  I make sure I sweep the mixture up well.  My goal is to do what I do, like use carpet freshener, but try to do it with less chemicals than products from a store.

I also made my own laundry soap and I love it!  Check out the blog later this week for that recipe and how to steps!

babies

I know so many families that are having babies this year.  My sister-in-law is even having twins.  It is going to be an exciting year!

Last week I photographed Palmer.  She is the newest addition to one of my favorite families, the Swan family.  Here is a sneak peek of what we did last week:

She is so pretty, just like her mom.

I also have photographed her brother, Patrick, since he was born.  She made faces that looked like his faces.

And here he is looking on...

They are both so cute and sweet.  I love that Patrick is older and so fun!
